For the first time in 2010, on January 16th the Belarusian Youth Movement in America organized two actions of solidarity held simultaneously in New York and Washington D.C.
Belarusian Youth Movement of America Belarusians who now live in the USA picketed the Embassy of Belarus in Washington D.C. and theUnited Nations Headquarters in NYC. They remembered their fellow-countrymen lost in fight for free Belarus and once again remind that the fight was not in vain. Today our independent country we owe to Tadeusz Kosciuszko and Kastus Kalinouski’s rebels, ”Nasha Niva” publishers and the founders of the BPR, Slutsk rebels, millions of the best Belarusian sons and daughters killed in the 1930ties of the last century and in Kurapaty and millions of other Belarusians. Though our Belarus is not exactly the country we are dreaming now or the country Genadz Karpenka, Viktar Ganchar, Jury Zaharanka, Dzmitry Zavadski, Veranika Charkasava, Vasil Grodnikau, Anatol Krasouski, Valiantsin Dounar were aspiring to. Holding their names in remembrance we are making steps towards the Belarus from our and their dreams. About thirty young Belarusians with banners flying gathered together in front of the UN headquarters to honor the memory of the people who are not with us anymore. They also came here to express their solidarity with their follow-countrymen in their aspiration for free Belarus. The Belarus they are dreaming of is the country of people who will know true Belarusian traditions, will be proud of their history, respect their language and will do everything possible for prosperity of the Belarusian nation. They also remind the Belarusian authorities that the lawlessness that reigns in Belarus now is sure to end and they will be called to account for all unlawful actions. American Belarusians remembered imprisoned Mikalai Autuhovich, Uladzimir Asipenka and Arcem Dubski, arrested Taras Surgun, detained Siarhei Kavalenka, threatened Iryna Halip, and expelled Tatyana Shap utska, kidnapped Zmicer Dashkevich and Jaugen Afnagel. Belarusians from Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Washington D.C. and Maryland sent their warmest regards, gratitude and encouragement to all Belarusians all over the world and in Belarus who dream about free better country. Passing motorists honked in support of the peaceful demonstrators with white red white flags in NYC and Washington as well as those in Belarus thousands of miles away The picket traditionally finished with “Pagonya” and “Magutny Boza” singing.
