When talking about national liberation movement against Russian colonizers, courage and justice, love to Motherland and self-devoting work for one’s countrymen, we mention the name of Kastus Kalinouski. Kalinouski possessed all the qualities of a true leader, who believed in one’s countrymen. His urges to obtain true freedom and independence, which were pronounced more than a century and a half ago, did not loose its topicality even today.
However, the main contribution of Kalinouski is in his great influence that he left behind, which still inspires generations of young Belarusans. Once he stepped on the road of political fight with over exercise of power and gave his life for the sake of his country, Kalinouski became an example to everyone of how one needs to respect and fight for one’s Motherland, native tong, and culture. Today, when the national hero celebrates his 169th Birthday, new movements and organizations named after the hero are being created; new songs and Internet pages about Kalinouski are born. Who knows maybe new Kalinouski, whose presence is so important for the revival of Belarus, will appear. From a prison’s cell Kastus sent to freedom his “From Beneath the Gallows”, a plea to Belarusan people. “Friends, my brothers! From under the Russian gallows I am writing to you for the last time. It is sad to leave my native land and you, my dear people. My breast sighs and my heart is sore, but it is not a sad lot to perish for your truth…There is no greater happiness on this earth, brothers, than if a man has intellect and learning… But just as day and night do not reign together, so also true learning does not go together with Muscovite slavery. As long as this lies over us, we shall have nothing. There will be no truth, no riches, no learning whatsoever. They will only drive us like cattle not to our well-being, but to our perdition. For I say to you from beneath the gallows, my people, you will only then live happily, when no Russian remains over you! Your servan Jaśko, yeoman from near Vilna.” |
