Grandfathers' Day in New York E-mail
Monday, 03 November 2008
On Sunday November 2 Belarusan Youth Movement of America held a demonstration devoted to Grandfathers' Day – day of commemorations of the ancestors. Mostly young people from different states took part in the action.

A lot of Americans indirectly took part in the demonstration. The matter of fact is that one of the posters was written in English asking drivers to “Horn for Belarus Freedom”.

And the local drivers were happy to support the demonstrators by blowing the horns. At some point a driver of a big bus stopped his vehicle and shouted onto the 1st ave from the bus window “Long live Belarus!!!” in belarusan.

Together with young people demonstration had been attended by some well known belarusans – Chairman of the Conservative Party of Belarusan Popular Front and a member of its central committee, a member of the belarusan artist union, Yauhen Shatohin, who came to New York with his personal exhibition.

After the demonstration everybody gathered in St. Cyril's of Turau Cathedral, where Zianon Pazniak spoke about Grandfathers' Day. After that a documentary, “Path to Kurapaty”(1990) has been shown. This film has been prohibited in Belarus in the earlier 1990s.
