Demonstration in New York in support of the “Young Front" (Malady Front) E-mail
Saturday, 20 January 2007
Belarusian Youth Movement of America has held a peaceful picket against anti-Belarusan policies of the Russian government and in support of Belarusan democracy on the 20th of January, 2007. The event took place next to the Russian embassy in New York. Nearly 20 BYMA members from the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts took part in the event. During the demonstration the participants read the address of Zianon Pazniak to the youth and demanded the liberation of political prisoners in Belarus.

The event was held together with and on behalf of “Young Front” and the organization’s imprisoned leader Zmiter Dashkevich. At the same time, in Belarus many similar events happened in Saligorsk, Sluck, Liyban, Starobin, and Starye Darogi.

Before the rally’s start, a man dressed in civil clothes was spotted suspiciously observing the preparation. When asked to support the demonstration, he got discouraged and hurriedly disappeared. However, during the rally he kept on coming back to make pictures. At the very end, he stopped by the Russian embassy and started videotaping each participant.

New York citizens passing by stopped on their way to express their solidarity and wish freedom to Belarus.

New York City’s police expressed tremendous respect to the participants of the rally contrarily to usual Belarusian police’s behavior, which reflects in the abuse of force and arrests for the peaceful expression of thought.
